The Staten Island Advance is the only daily newpaper published in the borough of Staten Island. The
Staten Island Advance
also boasts the largest in circulation, which is approximately 68,000 daily and 89,000 on Sunday. The Advance's offices are on Fingerboard Road in Staten Island.
The Advance originally appeared in 1886. John J. Crawford and James C. Kennedy were the original printers and was originally named the Richmond County Advance. Later, the name would be changed to the Daily Advance and then ultimately to the
Staten Island Advance. When the Advance first began, there were nine other competing newspapers in the borough.
Samuel Newhouse purchased the Advance in 1922. The Advance was part of the conglomerate that Newhouse would build over his lifetime, notably named the Advance/Newhouse Group.
The Staten Island Advance's offices were originally located in New Brighton until 1960 when they moved offices to the present day location on Fingerboard Road in Grasmere. While in New Brighton, the Advance was one of the first businesses to use commercial telephones and electricity.
